important Information from the School Nurse

The Indiana Department of Health believes that protecting Indiana’s citizens from vaccine-preventable diseases is one of the most important roles of public health. Indiana is experiencing an increase in Hepatitis A cases; Hepatitis A is a highly contagious liver infection that is preventable with a vaccine. To ensure that all of Indiana’s kids are properly protected against this disease, new school immunization requirements are being implemented for fall 2020. All students in kindergarten through 12th grade who attend an accredited school in Indiana will be required to have two doses of Hepatitis A vaccine prior to the start of the 2020-21 school year.

The Hepatitis A vaccine series is a two-dose series that requires 6 months between doses. Please contact your healthcare provider or the local health department to ensure your child has had this vaccine or to complete the series as soon as possible. With Christmas break quickly approaching, this would be a great time to schedule the first dose to ensure both doses are completed prior to August. This would also be a great time to discuss any other required vaccinations that your child may have due.

Please don’t hesitate to call or email us with any questions. We appreciate you helping to keep our school as safe as possible, and we hope you have a wonderful holiday season!
